🧵 Community Channels on Key

Updated over a month ago

Community Channels are dedicated spaces for structured, topic-based discussions within a specific community. They're designed to make group conversations more focused, interactive, and easier to follow.

Whether you're discussing ideas, collaborating on projects, or sharing important updates, Community Channels help keep everything organized and engaging.

🚀 How to Use Community Channels

Creating Channels

By default, only community admins can create new channels. Other users may be granted these permissions if assigned a special role by community admins.

  1. Tap “+” and select Create channel option

  2. Add appropriate channel name, description, and emoji

  3. Set up the privacy setting for the channel making it public or private

  4. Set up the default channel option according to the requirements and click the Create button

Note: Four default channels - #general, #random, #announcements, #introduction - will be automatically created while you set up a community. However, if you skip the process of setting up a community, no default channels will be created.

👤 Who Can Use Community Channels

Any member of a community can use Community Channels.

They’re built for community members, admins, moderators, and anyone interested in ongoing group discussions.

Managing Notifications

On the web, simply click the three dots on the right side of the channel that appear when you hover over the channel name. There, you’ll find options for Mute notifications and Leave channel.

In the app, you can press and hold the channel name, and you’ll see options for Mute and Leave channel.

  • Mute channels you don’t want to be notified about

  • Leave a channel at any time if it’s no longer relevant

Admin & Moderator Tools

  • Create or delete channels: Admins and moderators can tap the “+” button to create new channels or use the three-dot menu next to a channel to delete it.

  • Pin important messages: Click the three dots beside a message and select “Pin message” to keep important info easy to find. You can pin up to 3 messages per channel.

  • Moderate content by removing messages: Use the three-dot menu next to any message and select “Remove message” to delete inappropriate content.

  • Remove members from specific channels: Tap the profile icons next to the channel name to open the member list, then use the three-dot menu beside a member’s name and select “Remove from channel.”

Organizing Channels with Categories

Categories help your community stay organized, especially when managing multiple discussions at once.

To create a new category:

By default, only community admins can create a new category. Other users may also be granted these permissions if assigned a special role by community admins.

  1. Tap the “+” button

  2. Select “Create Category”

  3. Enter a name for the category and tap Create

To move or remove a channel from a category:

  1. Tap the three dots next to the channel name

  2. Select “Move to”

  3. In the pop-up window, choose an existing category, remove the channel from a category, or create a new one

💡 Pro Tip: Use clear, topic-based names for your categories—like “Announcements,” “Ideas,” or “Project X”—to make it easier for members to find and join the right conversations quickly
